History of the United Way for the
City of Kawartha Lakes
For more than seven decades people have been caring for others in our community. On January 1st, 1967 United Way was incorporated in the Town of Lindsay.
In the 1980s the United Way board of directors responded to the needs of citizens outside the town of Lindsay by expanding to include all of Victoria County. In August 2002, in response to the change of the name of our geographic catchment area, a final name change occurred: United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes. Across Canada there are approximately 117 United Ways. Each one is autonomous and has a locally elected volunteer Board of Directors that sets the policy and direction of the organization.
This United Way is no longer just a funding agency! It is a community builder, enabling people to make a difference through community partnerships, investment and collaboration. The concept of people working together to care for one another in our community means more than 25,000 individuals can access programs and services.
