Safe Communities
Kawartha Lakes
Safe Communities Kawartha Lakes is a designated community of Safe Communities Canada. The mission of this community collaboration is to reduce injury and death through awareness and education. Visit Safe Communities Canada for information on the program, injury prevention initiatives and on line training opportunities.
Safe Communities Kawartha Lakes is guided by a Leadership Table comprised of community leaders and safety champions and supported by a part time Coordinator. The Coordinator's position is funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Contact Safe Communities Kawartha Lakes via the United Way office.
Coboconk Duck Derby
For 14 years, the Coboconk Lions Club has partnered with United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes to hold an annual Duck Derby race. Everyone gets into the spirit in the village of Coboconk. This year, more tickets than ever will be printed, and all cash prizes will be offered. Tickets are available in stores throughout Coboconk. The Duck Derby is held on the Sunday of the August long weekend each year.
Half of the funds from this event go toward Lions’ Club projects in the Village, and United Way invests its share into programs like rural outreach.
Crayola Canada Sale
Traditionally, the Crayola Canada Sale (which is our single largest fundraiser of the year) is held the Saturday after Thanksgiving. (October 16, 2010). The sale brings people from all over Ontario for great buys on Crayola products, from bulk markers to artist’s kits. We are truly honoured to be considered Crayola Canada’s charity of choice here in the City of Kawartha Lakes. Crayola Canada employees also participate in payroll deduction and we receive a corporate gift. Thank you Crayola Canada! You make our community a great place to live! Hundreds of citizens benefit from your gift each year.
Girls Night Out
United Way partnered with Trish's Wish Foundation for the fourth annual girls-only event, which this year featured a Mardi Gras theme. Fleming College once again offered its facility as our venue. The girls enjoyed some drinks, ice cream, zumba and belly dancing classes, and learning about businesses in the area.
Annis-Way Signs

Sara Dunkley, president of Annis-Way Signs, is a huge supporter of United Way CKL. She has donated two highway signs (one of Hwy. 35, one on Hwy. 7) that encourage people who live, work or play in the City of Kawartha Lakes to donate to United Way.

Holsag Canada
Bjorn Alfredsson owns Holsag Canada. In 2006 and 2009, he hosted clearance sales of thousands of chairs, with proceeds to United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes. Bjorn’s staff organized the sale, and worked alongside United Way staff and volunteers. The last event saw more than $24,000 raised, which was split between United Way and the Boys and Girls Club.
